End Grain Chopping Block
Catskill Craftsmen uses sustainably-harvested North American hardwood in all their products, including this elegant, mid-sized chopping block. Its 1-3/4 inches thick and 16-1/4 inches by 12 inches. Typically, chopping boards are constructed in end-grain style, and the Contemporary Block is no exception. Catskill end-grain butcher blocks are made by stacking in the upright position short strips of hardwood arranged in a grid pattern. Not only does this impart great vertical strength to the block, it also produces a cutting surface with striking beauty. The exposed ends of hardwood reveal the interesting and intricate growth-ring patterns of the trees from which its sourced. The end result is an extremely durable cutting surface comprised of wood fibers that are both resilient and forgiving. They are largely resistant to nicks from knife blades; and they inflict relatively little damage to the sharp blades that cut into them.
